Body Mass Index (BMI) is a calculation that uses your height and weight to determine a number which gives approximate indication of whether your weight fits into a healthy recommended standard or whether you are at risk of being under or over weight. If your BMI is over 25, it can indicate that you are overweight and that you may benefit from some weight loss.

This BMI calculator is for adults only. Different BMI calculation rules apply for children and adolescents. Also there are some limitations to the Body Mass Index calculation because it does not measure body composition (i.e. how much of your body weight is fat and how much is muscle). BMI overestimates body fat in persons who are very muscular and it can underestimate body fat in persons who have lost muscle mass (e.g., elderly people). People with more muscular builds may be classified as overweight according to BMI numbers even if they have a very healthy body fat percentage. A high BMI from increased muscle alone is not associated with health risks.
